Our client, a well-established specialist commercial organisation based in Chorleywood, is seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper / Project Accountant to support its Finance Director and wider management team. This is a full-time, office-based role offering a salary of £50,000 to £60,000, 30 days’ paid holiday including bank holidays, a pension scheme and an allocated parking space.
The Senior Bookkeeper / Project Accountant will manage a broad range of accounting, management reporting and financial control activities across a group structure. The role would suit a self-motivated and highly organised finance professional with strong attention to detail, solid management accounts experience and the confidence to identify discrepancies, improve processes and provide clear financial information to senior stakeholders.
This is a full-time, office-based position in Chorleywood.
Key duties:
• Completing daily bank reconciliations across multiple accounts, monitoring receipts and balances, and providing regular cash updates to relevant stakeholders.
• Preparing and posting sales and purchase invoices, payments, petty cash, credit card transactions and employee expenses accurately and promptly.
• Preparing draft monthly management accounts, including journals, intercompany adjustments, balance sheet reconciliations and supporting month-end and year-end files.
• Maintaining accurate stock and transaction records, including purchase and sale details, deposits, outstanding balances, associated costs and supporting paperwork.
• Producing weekly stock, debtor and transaction reports, highlighting overdue balances, missing documentation and potential financial risks.
• Reviewing VAT treatment, including margin scheme liabilities and evidence required for qualifying export transactions.
• Checking bank details, payment templates and security verification before transactions are approved, while identifying potential contra arrangements or account discrepancies.
• Preparing information for the year-end audit and supporting the Finance Director and business managers with reporting, analysis, transaction structures and process improvements.
Key skills and experience:
• Previous experience in a Senior Bookkeeper, Project Accountant, Management Accountant or similar finance role.
• Strong management accounts and group accounting experience.
• Previous audit preparation or audit support experience.
• Strong VAT knowledge, including complex VAT transactions.
• Confident completing bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations and intercompany adjustments.
• Intermediate or advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to financial controls.
• Ability to identify anomalies and raise concerns promptly.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
• Self-motivated, proactive and comfortable working closely with senior management.
• Experience of VAT margin schemes or accounting within asset or vehicle sales would be advantageous but is not essential.
